RAIA: United Club of Verna triumphed over Candolim SC with a resounding 5-0 victory, advancing to the semi-finals of the 51st Custodio Memorial Football Tournament, organised by Raia Sporting Club, at the Raia Panchayat ground, on Sunday.
From the start, United Club of Verna's coach, Wilson Fernandes, instructed his team to take long-range shots, a strategy that paid off with four goals in the first half. The match was played in front of over 1,800 enthusiastic spectators, whose spirits remained high despite the rain. Jesloy Moniz shone for United Club of Verna, while Sanket Jodkar stood out for Candolim SC.
Verna's four quick goals came from Jesloy Moniz, who scored twice, and Clifton Rebello and Stephen Satarkar, who added a goal each in the 10th, 14th, 16th, and 20th minutes, respectively. Candolim SC missed opportunities through Sanket Jodkar and Melvin Lobo.
Jesloy Moniz completed his hat-trick by netting the fifth goal for United Club of Verna in the 48th minute. Later, a move by Sanket Jodkar of Calangute SC was thwarted by Verna's defense.
