MAPUSA: Vasco Sports Club ended their miserable run of poor results by getting the better of Calangute Association Sports Club 2-0 in the 13th round match of the Goa Professional League match organised by GFA, played at Duler stadium, here, on Monday.

Vasco scored a goal in each half through Nigerian Nna Henry Ezeh and Beneston Barretto to move to 14 points from 14 matches while Calangute Association remained in the relegation drop zone with 7 points from 11 matches.

Nna Henry Ezeh who was completed unmarked by the Calangute defense put Vasco ahead in the fifth minute with a well-directed header from a cross by Schubert Pereira.

Vasco almost doubled their lead four minutes later, Schubert Pereira getting past two defenders busted into the danger box and let go a firm shot which hit the side netting.

Calangute were on the backfoot for most part of the match and need to thank their keeper Sanji Bugde who stood like a wall, first denying Vasco U-20 Aman Goverkar twice and then later blocking Nna Henry Ezeh’s blistering goal bound shot from finding the net.

Calangute Association in need of a win to improve their league position saw their coach fielded the foreign signings from Senegalese Sidath Ndiaye and Abdoul Ahal Fall but both failed in making any impact.

Crossing over, the ball was mostly confined to the midfield with some long rangers fired from Vasco’s Moises D’Sa, Beneston Barretto and Sanwil D’Costa which lacked direction while at the other end Calangute’s Mohammad Shahsad missed a golden opportunity of getting his team back on level terms.

Calangute nearly made it 1-1 in the 77th minute but Abdoul Fall header lacked direction after a 35-yard free-kick delivered into the penalty box by Dominic Fernandes.

Vasco’s Moises D’Sa was unlucky to get his name on the scoresheet when his rasping shot ricocheted off the crossbar.

Vasco who were holding on to the one goal lead had a sigh of relief in the 89th minute when Abdoul’s header just went over the cross bar for a corner.

Beneston Barretto finally wrapped up the match for Vasco in  added time with a low grounder after Sanwil D’Costa’s free-kick was cushioned into his path by Nna Ezeh to make it 2-0.
