Schubert and Flan score for the Port Towners while Alvito reduces the margin for losers
MAPUSA: Vasco Sports Club secured their second win in a row as they scrapped past Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim 2-1 in the Goa Professional League match, organised by Goa Football Association, played at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Wednesday.
Vasco who defeated Guardian Angel SC in the last match had two changes to their side as U-20 winger Flan Gomes replaced Franky Oliveira, while their coach Eban Mesquita also gave first start to Shushant Borkar in the starting XI.
Whereas, Cavelossim coach Severino Fernandes also made a few changes to their side after a defeat against Corps of Signals as goalkeeper Razak Devsor made the debut while Cayven Araujo and Ralfh Fernandes were the other two changes in the line-up.
At the other end, Cavelossim’s attacking midfielder Moises D'Sa came up with two quick shot from the distance but on both the occasions his strikes went over the crossbar.
Cavelossim came up with another opportunity in the 24th minute when Mathew Colaco nicely curled the ball to Allwyn Vaz in the box who headed on goal from close but Vasco keeper Amit Biswas came with a brilliant save to keep his side safe.
Vasco finally surged ahead in the 36th minute when their skipper Schubert Pereira calmly finished the ball home from six yards after receiving a square pass from Deryl Endro to make it 1-0 for the Port Towners.
Cavelossim had a chance to equalise in the added minutes of the first session when Mathew once again came with up an inch-perfect cross to Moises but Vasco keeper Amit was at his best as he made diving efforts to clear the danger.
Vasco doubled their lead within 10 minutes of the second session when Anil Gaoncar made a darting run on the wing and curled it to skipper Schubert in the box who made a dummy move and left the ball to his on rushing teammate Flan Gomes. The winger's fluent shot from inside the box finished in the back of the nylons to make it 2-0 for his side.
A few minutes later, Cavelossim reduced the margin through Alvito Miranda who easily cut past three defenders after receiving a back pass from Vasco midfielder Deryl, and made no mistake to beat the keeper from close to make it 1-2 for the South Goan side.
