DABOLIM: Daniel Cheruiyot Gegon from Kenya for the second consecutive year bagged the top honour in 21km men’s half marathon race in the fourth edition of Goa River Marathon, organised by Vasco Sports Club in Association with Skechers in Vasco city, Sunday.
Around 2000 athletes (men and women) participated in this event and Daniel clocked the timing of 1:04:19 while Bizuneh Melaku Belachew (1:04:39) Utopia and Ejerssa Temesgen Daba (1:05:21) bagged the second and third place, respectively.
In the Women’s category, Tarus Gladys Jepkechet bagged the first place setting the time of 1:19:29, while Bezabeh Alem Tsehay Assefa (1:21:35) finished second and Lelo Dereje Geresu (1:24:46) third place.
In 10km Men’s Run, Gubay Alemayehu Gebretsad secured the first place clocking 0:30:51. Gobena Mulugteta Oli finished second with (0:31:16) while Dibaba Areda Hipro had to settle for the third place clocking (0:31:31).
In 10km Women’s Run, Worknesh Tesso (0:37:05) bagged the first place while Selamawit Wondim Agegn (0:39:26) and Worke Birjukan Minyihun (0:40:33) finished second and third respectively. Suji Mathew (1:09:13) and Vijay Mala Patel were the winners in the Indian men and woman category, respectively.
Anil Kumar (01:31:51) secured the first place while Uday V Mahajan (01:32:42) and Balakrishnan T (01:34:59) finished second and third in the Men’s Veteran category of the Half Marathon.
Sabhajeet Yadhav (01:31:31) bagged the first place while Bhasker Rejendra Desai (01:41:21) and Savio D'Souza (01:43:26) finished on second and third position in the Men’s Senior Veterans Half Marathon.
In the Super Veteran category, Jens Peter Hansen (02:02:16) begged the first position while Mahadev Samjiskar (02:04:06) and Pankaj Desai (02:16:24) finished second and third.
In the Women’s Veteran category, Khushid N Mistry clocked first with 01:54:02 timing while Taru Mateti (01:59:22) and Sandra Jacquet (02:02:44) had to settle for second and third place.
In the Senior Women Veteran category, Pervin Kushru Batliwala (02:04:19) finished first while Vaijayanti Deepak Ingawal (02:23:25) came second. Francisco Clemente (1:16:6) and Shalini Menezes were the winners in the Goan men and women category.
The 5 km Fun walk witnessed large number of participation and the entry fee proceeds would be donated to the charities such as Cooj, Ashadeep New Dawn School for the Mentally Challenged, and Muskaan Support Group for cancer patients and survivors.
Governor of Goa Bharat Vir Wanchoo, Minister for Labour and Employment Avertan Futardo, Power Minister Milind Naik, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, Porvorim MLA Rohan Kaunte, Deputy Speaker Anant Sheth and Sports Scientist Shyamal Vallabjee, who has twice done the gruelling African 89 KM Comrades 8-hour run, participated.
Savio D’Souza, five times India Champion marathoner and the running ambassador of GRM 2013 earlier flagged off.
Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar and Minister for Industries Mahadev Naik complimented the organisers for organising the event very successfully.
Mahadev urged the participant to take part in “Run for Unity” event, scheduled on December 15.
