Against all odds

Mhozo Sangati Tho Cast: Valencia, Clency, Felcy, Ulhas Tari, Mario de Vasco, Caziton, Dominic, Luis Bachan, Ignatius, Anthony Braganza, Sally Director: Patrick Dourado

Band: Seby Morais/James (trumpet), Elffio

(keyboard), Rahul (bass), Xavier (drums)

Story: After the death of her husband, Succorin

(Felcy) brings up her two collegegoing

daughters Joyce (Clency) and

Queencie (Valencia) single-handedly. Her

brother, Salu (comedian Dominic), continuously

warns her of the consequences if

the youngsters don’t learn to shoulder responsibility.

But there’s much to follow

Review: Queencie’s secret affair with Cliff

(Ulhas Tari), the son of a minister (Mario de

Vasco), leaves her pregnant. This revelation

leads to trumoil in the family. As the

family struggles to deal with the situation

and unearth the truth, Cliff steps in.

Queencie confesses to her fiancé about

her pregnancy and expects sympathy. But

he has another solution in mind. Abortion.

Meanwhile, Cliff’s influential father is in a

hurry to settle the matter, before his image

is tarnished in the public. Queencie’s mom

simultaneously fights for justice. What is

the fate of Queencie and the unborn in

her womb? Will she succeed to make her

future? With whom? Who comes to her aid

in moments of difficulty? And finally, who

turns out to be her true lifetime partner?

The tiatr script penned by newcomer Jose

Sequeira is crisp, with several events unfolding

one after another. Noted director

Patrick Dourado has done a fair job in directing

the script. Besides those tense moments,

there are scenes of joy and

amusement that unfurl in between the

acts with comedian Dominic, Luis Bachan

and Sally doling out fine performances. A

female character among them would have

enhanced the comic interludes, which

otherwise stand on their own.

As the understanding mom, Felcy’s role

stands out. Valencia is confident in her

character. Clency shows great scope for a

bright future on the Konkani stage. Ulhas

Tari and Mario de

Vasco are apt in their respective

temperaments.

With regard to songs, there is a galaxy of

singers to entertain with melodious

singing. Besides solos from Marcus Vaz,

Rosario de Benaulim, Succor de Santa

Cruz, Saby de Divar, Tony de Ribandar,

Mario de Vasco and Caziton de Cacora,

you also have duets and trios from

Ave/Felcy, Eddie/Ignatius de Xelvon/Cajetan

de Curtorim and Caziton/Ave/Succor.

Seby Morais and his team provide some

soothing music, while Baltu has handled

the light effects diligently.

‘Mhozo Sangati Tho’ is thoroughly convincing

and if you’re a fan of family drama,

you’ll surely get your money’s worth.
