Unidentified man found murdered at Dabolim
VASCO: An unidentified man was found brutally murdered near Dabolim Railway station in the wee hours of Thursday.
According to Mormugao DySP Laurence D’Souza, police received a call on Thursday at about 9 am stating that an unidentified male body was found lying between the railway tracks near the Dabolim Railway station.
DySP D’Souza further informed that acting on the information, Railway Police station In-charge Sharif J Jacques along with Vasco PI Rupendra Shetgaokar rushed to the site. Police said the incident occurred in the wee hours of Thursday and the body had injuries with a sharp weapon and a stone was used to crush the victim’s head. D’Souza stated that deceased, suspected to be in his early forties, was a migrant, wheatish in complexion, was wearing black/blue designed T-shirt and grey/black coloured pant and the victim’s hands were tied with a coir rope/wire. The railway police on Thursday night arrested two persons in connection with the murder. PSI Jacques is investigating the case.
Male body found at Mapusa
PORVORIM: An unidentified male body was found near SBI Bank Mapusa on Wednesday. According to Mapusa Police, the body has been preserved in GMC Morgue in Bambolim for post-mortem and identification. PSI Prajyot Fadte is investigating the case.

CURCHOREM: A resident of Sirvoi-Quepem allegedly committed suicide at his residence on Wednesday.
According to Quepem Police, Hiru Kolanbe was brought dead at PHC Cacora and the body has been preserved in Hospicio in Morgue. PSI S Desai is investigating
Cash stolen from donation box of Khandola temple
PONDA: Cash of Rs 40,000 was stolen from the donation box at Ganesh Temple at Khandola.
According to Ponda Police, the incident was reported on Thursday at about 6.45 am and the temple priest Mahesh Sukhtankar lodged a complaint.
Police further informed that at the time of incident, the temple priest was performing Pooja and was alone in the temple. While performing the Pooja, the priest heard some sound and when he came out of the sanctum-sanctorum, the donation box was found broke open and cash of Rs 40,000 stolen. PSI Mohan Gaude is investigating the case.
Burglary at mobile store in Verna
VASCO: Burglars decamped with cash and mobile phones worth Rs 1.25 lakh from a mobile store at Pirni, Verna in the wee hours of Thursday.
According to Verna Police, after they received a complaint at about 1.30 am on Thursday, they rushed to the site and found the shutter of R S Kantak Mobile Store bent and the burglars gained entry through the shutter.
Police further informed that the burglars stole cash of Rs 4,000 and 40 mobile phones, all worth Rs 1.25 lakh.
Police have registered an offence against unknown person and is investigating the case.
One held for playing loud music
CALANGUTE: Anjuna Police on Wednesday night arrested a 20-year-old native of Gadag, but residing at Anthonywada-Anjuna, on charges of playing loud amplified music in a bar and restaurant at Praisewada-Anjuna.
According to Anjuna Police, accused, Manjunath Naik, was found playing loud amplified music without permission from competent authority beyond 11 pm, causing annoyance and nuisance to the public.
Anjuna Police arrested the accused under Sections 7 and 10 of MP of Music and Noise Act 1951 and PSI M Kerkar is investigating the case.
Cash, goods stolen at Calangute
CALANGUTE: Calangute Police on Thursday arrested a 30-year-old resident of Agar Vaddo, Calangute, on charges of stealing cash, gold and other items worth Rs 7.50 lakh.
According to Calangute Police, British national, George Hollingsworth, complained that his belongings worth Rs 7.50 lakh including cash of Rs 1.32 lakh were stolen from his room at Cobra Vaddo, Calangute, in the wee hours of Thursday.
Police further informed that Peter Ronny Xavier alias Pitu was arrested on charges of stealing cash of Rs 1.32 lakh, one I Phone, seven gold and diamond rings, one gold and diamond pendant, two pairs of gold and diamond earrings, one gold earring and one gold plated watch. Police further informed that the goods except for a pair of earring and cash of Rs 16,000 were recovered from the accused. PSI Harish Gauns is investigating the case under supervision of PI Nolasco Raposo.
Ponda local injured in accident
PONDA: A resident of Borim-Ponda was injured after he was knocked down by a scooter at Borim. According to Ponda Police, Rupesh Prabhu complained that his son, Sushant, sustained injury to his leg after he was knocked down by the scooter (GA-05-H-0380).
Bail application rejected
MARGAO: South Goa district sessions judge, Nutan Sardesai has rejected the bail application of one Basavraj Bandoppa Malgond, Mangor hill, Vasco, who is accused of committing an offence of attempt to murder. The accused is presently lodged at the Sada jail, Vasco. Accused Malgond was arrested by Vasco police under section 307 IPC following a complaint from Hamumanta Dharmappa Jargaddi, resident of Shantinagar, Vasco that the accused assaulted his wife Renuka under the influence of alcohol and tried to set her ablaze. Renuka is presently admitted at Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim.
Public Prosecutor Sarojani Sardinha had vehemently objected to the grant of bail to the accused.
Vipassana meditation course
PANJIM: Goa Vipassana Samiti is organizing its monthly, 1-day Vipassana meditation course on February 3, from 10 am to 4 pm, at ‘Queen Laura’, opposite Patrao Plaza, next to Axle Height, on the road to Britona, Alto Porvorim.
Conducted by an assistant teacher of Vipassana, this course is held every first Sunday of the month at the same venue. It is only for students who have already learnt the technique in a 10-day Vipassana course, as taught by S N Goenka, in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin. As usual, all courses in this tradition are free of cost.

Panjim: The Government of Goa has designated the Additional Secretary (Home) to be the Controlling Authority for the purposes of the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act. 2005.
Phone-in interview on DD
PANJIM: A renowned Konkani playwright and the President of Goa Konkani Akademi, Pundalik Naik, will be interviewed on February 1 on the Phone-In programme of Panjim Doordarshan Kendra.
The programme will be telecast from 7:15 pm to 8:00 pm. The programme is conducted on the occasion of Konkani Drama Centenary and Prof Purnanand Chari will conduct the interview.
The producer of the programme is Rajendra Phadte. 15 new books of drama written by Pundalik Naik have been released recently. Panjim Doordarshan has appealed to the viewers to ask questions to Pundalik Naik regarding Konkani drama on phone number – 2222424 and 2220029.

PANJIM: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee has decided to organize Block Committee meetings in all 40 constituencies on February 2 and 3.
All the Block Presidents of the Congress Party are requested to hold meetings in their respective constituencies on February 2 or 3 along with Pradesh Congress Committee members (PCC), District Congress Committee members (DCC), Youth President, Seva Dal President and Mahila President of the block.

Cansaulim waste plan yet to take off
CORTALIM: The Gram Sabha of Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim regretted on Sunday that its ambitious Self Sustaining Garbage Management Plan for its villages is yet to take off.
The members alleged that the plan had been submitted to the BDO and Goa State Pollution Control Board including identification of land belonging to the Comunidade of Cuelim but no action has been taken from the government side.
The gram sabha accepted the proposal of Dr Marconi Correia, to retain the Dabolim airport as the only airport for Goa, after the estimated Rs 500 crore expansion work order is executed. It was agreed to demand a tripartite agreement between the Prime Minister (Centre) the Chief Minister (Goa Government) and AAI (Airport Authority of India) to be inked out, clearly stating that Dabolim be retained as the only airport for Goa.

PANJIM: Dr Sidney Pinto do Rosario, Vice President of Goa Bharat Scouts and Guides and President of Bardez Scouts and Guides flagged off a rally of ‘Save Energy’ at the Garden centre, Mapusa recently.
In his speech, Dr Sidney quoted Mahatma Gandhi who said: ‘I pray that every home in India may have children like Scouts and Guides’.
Bougainvilla Hermitage conducts free health camp
PANJIM: Bougainvilla Hermitage Pvt Ltd, in association with Dr Digambar Naik of Vrundavan Shalby Hospital and his team conducted a free Diabetic Detection and Health Check-up Camp for seniors on Sunday, January 27 at the Bougainvilla Hermitage Retirement Village, Nachinola.
Over 100 patients including residents of Bougainvilla-Hermitage and people from adjoining villages attended. Blood sugar levels and monitoring of blood pressure was carried out. Free medicines were also dispersed.
About 30% of the patients examined were detected to have diabetes.

Victor Albuquerque appointed Honorary Russian Consul
PANJIM: Victor Albuquerque has been appointed as the Honorary Consul of the Russian federation in Panjim with the Consular region comprising of the State of Goa.
His Excellency, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to India, Alexander Kadakin, has issued a letter of appointment dated January 18, to this effect.
The Ambassador mentions that the Russian Consul’s presence in Goa is an important development as Goa is the most popular destination for Russian tourists which is more than 1,50,000 per annum.
Victor Albuquerque is the Chairman and Managing Director of the Alcon Victor group. The office of the Consul is expected to function from Panjim shortly.
