WORKING TO THE PERFECTION OF TUNES…
A graduate in economics from St Xaviers College, Mumbai, Vian
started learning the cello at the age of 10. From the year 2017-2018 Vian
studied playing the Cello in France and Monaco and finally returned to Goa last
November. This year, she presented her talent and music by organizing two
Chamber Music concerts in Goa, at the Immaculate Conception Church and at the
Carmelite Monastery, Margao. She has involved a group of great musicians from
Goa to showcase their talents as well, and the event worked out absolutely
fine.
She obtained her Diplôme d’Etudes
Musicales at the Conservatory of Aulnay-sous-bois, 2015- 2017 and specialised
in Baroque music at the Conservatory of Nice. She was also enrolled in
perfecting her skill on the cello at the Prince Rainier III Academy of Music
and Theatre in Monaco, 2017-2018. Her most beautiful learning experience came
during her study of the lutherie with Italian violin maker Roberto Masini,
which is the art of restoration of musical instruments.
CELLO- WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
According to Vian Pereira, the cello is the bass in chamber and
orchestral music. It is the foundation on which all other instruments rely in
terms of intonation and rhythm. It is said to be the instrument that is closest
in pitch to the human voice. It is physically a bigger instrument than the
violin and viola but smaller than the double bass.
THE DREAM OF A CELLIST…
All through her schooling years, Vian along with her three
sisters would go for athletic training to the grounds close to their residence.
Post that every invigorating session, they would practice their respective
instruments. She spent her entire childhood learning music, “While other
children were playing, we were practicing music and training in sports.”
Her dad was an amateur violinist and
guitarist and would accompany her sisters for singing competitions in Mumbai.
Vian was little girl and too young to participate in these competitions back
then, but was keen on sitting in their rehearsals and attending their
competitions. “So, music was always around me. Like most Catholic families we
were exposed to music through the church. By the time I was of age to choose an
instrument, my sisters were already learning their instruments (piano and
violin). Wanting to be different from them I choose the cello.” explains Vian.
Growing up, Vian decided to join a private bank in Mumbai for
close to 2 years but soon enough realized this was not for her. Simultaneously
in the same time period, auditions for The Symphony Orchestra of India were
going on, she fervently prepared and \won the opportunity.
After realizing that music was the right track, Vian started
working on background scores of movies in the Indian cinema. She performed
solo, chamber and orchestral concerts in India and abroad. She also represented
India and the world orchestra held in South Korea in 2010.
Vian precisely describes the major role her grandmother and
mother played to inspire her melody. “They worked tirelessly to give us
opportunities to enrich our lives with music and sport. They have been my
driving force in taking the unbeaten path. I wouldn’t be where I am today
without them,” says Vian thanking her two inspirations.
NOTEWARD
Noteword is a company based in Mumbai initiated 10 years ago with
Vian as a co-founder. The other co-founders are Vian’s sisters, Ursula Pereira,
Pearl Pereira, Crystal-Ann Fernandes and her mother Cymbeline Pereira.
Noteward was started at the time the sisters wanted to showcase
their talents since there weren’t any platforms available. Noteward was born as
the need to give local artists a stage to perform. Presently in Mumbai,
Noteward organizes workshops for children and concerts for them to perform in
the field of theatre and drama and that of music.
The
main intention to conduct the event in Goa was in order to bring together
musicians of Goa to perform in a chamber music concert. “Something that is not
done so often in Goa”, says Vian.
