When Goa influenced the influencer

A noted influencer and Bollywood actor Shenaz Treasury recently travelled to Goa and uploaded her photographs online of rising on a bike through the villages of North Goa without wearing a mask. This led to strong social media reactions, forcing the actor to apologize. Cafe spoke to stakeholders on whether the reaction of locals was too sharp or it was needed to send a message that we shouldn’t get too complacent in the fight against COVID. There were strong views on either side put forth

It was fine she came over and this noise over her not wearing a mask is ridiculous. She came and she took photographs of our beautiful Goa and some without a mask, so what. It all depends on the situation. If she was alone it was absolutely ok. If she was around people and she maintained the required social distance then what was the problem. People are going overboard with this mask requirement. You cannot be wearing it all the time even if you are alone at home. If she was ok then what was the problem. European charters are willing to come but on the condition they don’t have to wear masks. The British have made it very clear that they will come if wearing a mask was not made compulsory. The bloggers and others criticising Shenaz in Goa are sending out a wrong signalSavio Messias Former TTAG President

Goa is an attractive destination and people locked up in other metros because of Coronavirus would love to travel to. Shenaz travelling to Goa maybe an escape for her, but is dangerous for the community. As an influencer she should have been vocal about no travel and staying safe. She has failed totally in passing the right message and being trolled was the best thing to happen- Bharat Kamat Chairman at Indian Green Building Council Goa Chapter

She is promoting Goa. Is that bad? She apologized when people criticized her for not wearing a mask and travelling at this point in time. With regards to the mask are people wearing masks and walking around. There is a lot of unemployment in Goa. Go to Panjim, Calangute the tourist belt, there are so many shops closed. The area is deserted. What will the people do if the situation does not improve in a couple of months? Shernaz did it in good faith and it was good for Goa. We have to see the positive in this. COVID is here to stay and people have to learn to live with it. Over the long weekend hotels in Udaipur was 85 % full. There is free movement between Gujarat and Rajasthan and other states. We need to follow the sops and perhaps even take a look at it.  We have to be more realistic- Nilesh Shah President TTAG

I think anyone roaming the streets without a mask shows extreme immaturity and irresponsibility, this pandemic is not a joking matter and one needs to take personal responsibility to see that it does not spread. People in general, especially influencers should show sensibility and not put others lives at risk just to increase their Instagram followers!! We are happy to welcome everyone to Goa but we must remind people that we the locals are not ready to take unnecessary nonsense and behaviour that is putting us, our families and our state at riskKabir Pinto Makhija Ex Deputy Mayor CCP

So she came and travelled around Goa, so what was the problem? There are no curbs on travelling, right. With regards to not wearing a mask, my argument is simple. If you are alone how does it matter? Unless of course you are in a poorly ventilated room or exchanging views with a group of people. Otherwise, I think it would be foolish to wear a mask all the time. While on a bike, why should she wear a mask but if she is in a market then yesJack Sukhija Hotelier  Panjim

So influencers, travellers, tourists etc, yes the Goan economy is heavily dependent on tourists and it is helping a lot of people generate an income right now, be it the house owners, restaurant or home kitchen delivering, maintenance staff etc. But please be mindful of what you post. It is not business as usual, putting up pictures without wearing a mask, or even doing that in reality, not socially distancing etc  are just things that need to stop. What also needs to stop is this impression that they give about Goa being all good and as good as a green zone. Also, guests need to even if they have a COVID19 negative certificate, ideally, self isolate themselves for at least 7 days instead of immediately throwing a party or calling their friends living hereNupura  Hautamaki, Marketing Consultant
