Mapusa fish market needs urgent attention

Herald Team

T he Mapusa fish market is turning into a death-knell for the visitors. In the beginning, the market inspectors would regularly come to the place to ensure that the fisherfolk occupy the allotted places. One will find that at the entrance there are scooters parked blocking the entry way. Then you have the beggars with small children begging for alms.

Thereafter you have to be careful of your steps. The full floor is wet with water flowing due to the melting ice from the fish baskets. Most fisherfolk bring several baskets of assorted fish and keep some covered with ice. Many people have slipped and fallen and the lucky ones managed to keep their control.

Furthermore some fisherfolk have started cleaning the fish inside the market. The shell fish sellers also carelessly throw the used water on the floor. Some stand at the entrance and exit gates to sell fish blocking the free movement of people.

The Municipality must redeploy the inspectors at regular intervals to ensure that people can finish their purchases without any risk to their life and instruct the fisherfolk to avoid spillage of water on the floor.
