WAYS TO PREVENT INDUSTRIAL UNREST

Herald Team
India is a democratic country in which trade unions abound due to the discrimination of workmen or employees, who are not being paid their just dues, thus leading to management-workers' union unrest which can be prevented if every workmen or employee is compensated according to his or her productive contribution towards the advancement of their respective companies. The salary of an employee has to reflect his or her true contribution towards realisation of profitability, each according to his or her own efforts. Workmen and employees have to be treated as partners or shareholders of the company they are working for. It is beyond doubt that the workmen are the backbone of the company and their actual efforts are the reason why companies make profit.
As far as listed companies in India are concerned, it would be prudent if every company extends the Employees Stock Option Scheme so that every one in the company is a registered shareholder of the company and made to feel as proportionate partners in the company. All companies should set aside 10 percent of their net profit to pay incentives for workmen according to their productive contributions. A great deal of management-workmen tension and bad will can be eradicated if managements treat their workmen recognizing their contributions and rewarding them accordingly.
It is absolutely certain that every workmen is an important cogwheel in the entire set up of the company and thus all should be treated with respect and due consideration. If the system of incentives is adopted, workmen will be keen to produce more and strive more in order to contribute towards the productivity and efficiency of the company thus reducing totally industrial unrest and leading to a conducive atmosphere which will be a win-win situation for all.
Another aspect is that equal pay for equal work has to be made. Discrimination on grounds of gender, caste, creed or religion should be totally abolished. A large number of man-days are lost due to industrial revolt which can be contained by managements if they give credit to where it belongs. In companies involving hazardous chemicals and risky production shop floor, risk allowances should be paid. Harmonious management-employee relations can increase productivity to such an extent that India can progress at a greater pace and also social tensions can be prevented. Every employee should be treated as the member of a family by the company so that differences can be ironed out thus preventing rancour and dissent. A good company is one where everybody lives together in harmony and works together for the common good.
