The pilot of an Air India Express flight bound for Indore from Delhi issued a “PAN-PAN” call on Friday after one of the aircraft’s engines developed a technical snag mid-air. The alert, which signals urgency but not a life-threatening emergency, prompted Air Traffic Control to arrange fire and medical support at Indore airport.
The Boeing aircraft, carrying 161 passengers, landed safely at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport at 9:55 am, around 20 minutes behind schedule. Airport director Vipinkant Seth said all safety protocols were followed.
According to the airline, the crew suspected an oil filter problem during descent and requested a priority landing. “Our pilots are well trained to manage such situations,” a spokesperson said, clarifying that this was not an emergency landing.
Globally, a “PAN-PAN” call signifies that assistance is required, though the situation is not immediately life-threatening. In contrast, a “MAYDAY” call indicates a serious, life-threatening emergency.
