A 50-year-old man from Bihar has been arrested in Noida for allegedly sending bomb threats to the official number of the Mumbai Traffic Police, officials said on Saturday (September 6).
The accused, identified as Ashwin Kumar Supra, was taken into custody after the chilling messages triggered panic across Mumbai. Police have seized his mobile phone and SIM card, and he is being brought to Mumbai for further questioning.
The threat message, sent on Friday, claimed that 34 “human bombs” had been planted across Mumbai and that 14 Pakistani terrorists had entered India. It also warned of a massive explosion using 400 kg of RDX, signed under the name of a group calling itself Lashkar-e-Jihadi.
The timing of the hoax raised serious concerns as Mumbai is currently in the midst of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, with Anant Chaturdashi — the festival’s grand finale — approaching. In response, Mumbai Police launched an immediate investigation and heightened security across the city.
“Following the threat, we stepped up surveillance and combing operations across sensitive locations. All angles are being investigated,” police officials said, while appealing to citizens not to spread rumours and to report any suspicious activities.
Authorities said multiple security checks are being carried out at key locations across Maharashtra, with additional deployment at crowded areas and immersion sites to ensure public safety during the festivities.
