A sudden cloudburst in Chamoli district’s Tharali area late Friday night triggered flash floods, claiming one life, leaving another person missing, and causing widespread destruction.
Authorities reported that debris from the cloudburst swept through the Tharali market, damaging shops, vehicles, and residential buildings. Several homes were buried under mud and rubble, and government establishments were also affected.
District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari described the situation as severe. “There is a possibility of significant damage due to the cloudburst in Tharali tehsil last night. A lot of debris has come down, resulting in many houses, including the SDM residence, being completely damaged,” he said.
Rescue and relief operations are underway as officials assess the full extent of the damage. Residents have been urged to remain cautious amid the risk of further landslides and flooding in the area.
