Not again! That's exactly what everyone is saying as, after causing global havoc, COVID-19 appears to be making a comeback. New cases have emerged in parts of Asia, particularly in densely populated regions like Hong Kong and Singapore. Health authorities in both locations have warned that the virus is spreading rapidly again, signalling a possible resurgence of a COVID-19 wave in Asia.
The virus is spreading aggressively in Hong Kong. Albert Au, head of the Communicable Disease Branch at the Centre for Health Protection, told local media this week that the percentage of positive COVID-19 cases has reached a one-year high.
According to the data, 31 new cases were reported during the week ending May 3. This includes a significant rise in hospitalisations and severe symptoms, though the current wave has not yet matched the peak levels seen in the past two years. Reports indicate that over 7 million people have been hospitalised due to COVID-related illnesses.
Singapore is currently on high alert. The Ministry of Health recently issued its first COVID-19 case update in nearly a year. As per the update, in the week ending May 3, the estimated number of cases rose by 28% compared to the previous week, reaching around 14,200 cases.
Both countries are closely monitoring the situation and have advised the public to remain cautious.
