Protests have erupted across Manipur’s Imphal Valley following the arrest of Kanan Singh, a prominent leader of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol. The unrest prompted authorities to impose curfews, restrict public gatherings, and suspend internet services in five districts to curb the spread of unrest.
Singh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday night at Imphal Airport for his alleged role in the 2023 Manipur violence. He was subsequently flown to Guwahati, where cases related to the violence are being heard due to security concerns in Manipur.
His arrest sparked widespread and, at times, violent demonstrations. Protesters blocked the airport entrance, set tyres, furniture, and a bus ablaze in Imphal East, and clashed with security forces in multiple areas. In one particularly alarming incident caught on video, a group of men dressed in black poured petrol over themselves and threatened self-immolation—though the video’s authenticity has yet to be confirmed. Security forces responded with tear gas and bolstered deployments, particularly around sensitive zones like Kangla Gate, near the Raj Bhavan.
To contain the escalating unrest, authorities have imposed curfews and prohibitory orders across five districts—Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching. Internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN access, have been suspended. Only medical personnel and accredited media professionals are exempt from the restrictions.
Adding to the tension, the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol has called for a 10-day total shutdown across the valley districts. The impact is already visible—roads lie deserted, shops remain closed, and a heavy security presence dominates the streets as the region braces for further disruption.
