Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old student from Tripura studying at Delhi University’s Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, has been missing since the early hours of July 7. According to her family, Sneha told her mother she was going to drop a friend at the Sarai Rohilla railway station that morning. However, the friend later confirmed that they never met.
Sneha’s last known communication was a phone call to her mother at 5:56 am, after which her phone was switched off. The family managed to trace her movements through a cab driver, who reported dropping her near Signature Bridge—an area sadly known for multiple suicide cases. However, no CCTV footage could be recovered from the location, as all cameras were reportedly non-functional at the time.
A handwritten note, allegedly found in Sneha’s room, claimed she felt like a "failure and burden" and intended to end her life by jumping off Signature Bridge. The note also stated that her decision involved "no foul play."
However, Sneha’s family has raised serious doubts about the note's authenticity. Her sister, Bipasha, pointed out that the note was unusually brief and vague, lacking any real explanation for such a drastic step. She emphasized that Sneha was academically bright, emotionally stable, and had shown no signs of depression. Both her mother and sister described her as cheerful, deeply bonded with her family, and not someone who would consider suicide.
The family has also criticized the police response, stating that the First Information Report (FIR) was not filed until more than 48 hours after Sneha went missing. They allege that investigators failed to act promptly in securing Sneha’s digital data or tracking her call records. The absence of functional CCTV cameras at the Signature Bridge further hindered the investigation.
Despite search operations by the Delhi Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), no trace of Sneha has been found as of now.
The case has attracted growing public concern, prompting Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to intervene and direct authorities to treat the matter with urgency.
