Elon Musk’s Tesla Arrives in India: Model Y Hits Mumbai Roads with a Premium Price Tag

Herald Team

Tesla officially entered the Indian market on July 15, 2025, with the launch of its Model Y electric SUV and the inauguration of its first showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The debut marks a key milestone as Tesla taps into the world’s third-largest auto market.

The Model Y is available in two rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variants:

Standard RWD priced at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), with a range of ~500 km

Long Range RWD at ₹67.89 lakh, offering up to 622 km per charge

Both versions come with sleek styling, black alloy wheels, and an optional black-and-white dual-tone interior. Buyers can also opt for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving package, priced at ₹6 lakh.

Bookings have opened with a token amount of ₹22,000, followed by a ₹3 lakh confirmation within seven days. Deliveries for the Standard variant are expected in Q3 2025, with the Long Range version arriving in Q4.

Due to India’s high import duties and logistical costs—Tesla is currently importing vehicles as Completely Built Units (CBUs)—Model Y prices are notably higher than in markets like the US (~₹38.6 lakh), China (~₹31.5 lakh), and Germany (~₹46 lakh). This places Tesla in India’s premium EV segment, competing with offerings from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis welcomed Tesla’s entry and encouraged the company to explore R&D and local manufacturing to reduce costs. With India targeting 30% EV adoption by 2030, Tesla’s arrival reflects rising momentum in the country’s electric mobility transition.
