The government on Wednesday approved an extension of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Anil Chauhan’s tenure, allowing him to continue in the role until May 30, 2026, or until further orders, whichever comes first.
Gen Chauhan, who has been serving as India’s top military officer since September 30, 2022, was due to complete his current term on September 30 this year. The extension also covers his role as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, the Defence Ministry confirmed.
The extension underscores the government’s confidence in Gen Chauhan’s leadership at a time of strategic challenges and ongoing defence modernization initiatives.
