In a shocking incident in Greater Noida, 28-year-old Nikki Bhati died after reportedly being set on fire by her husband, Vipin Bhati, following a domestic dispute over her Instagram posts and plans to reopen her beauty parlour, police said on Sunday. Vipin, also 28 and a resident of Kasna, admitted to the act and reportedly expressed “no remorse” for the crime, according to authorities.
Nikki succumbed to severe burn injuries at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on August 21, after being referred from two private hospitals.
During efforts by police to recover the flammable materials used in the attack, Vipin attempted to escape and allegedly snatched a police pistol, prompting officers to fire in retaliation, injuring him in the leg. He is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
In a related development, Nikki’s mother-in-law, 55-year-old Daya Bhati, was also arrested late Sunday. Family members of the deceased have alleged that the killing was linked to dowry demands, though police have stated they are investigating all possible angles. The couple had been married for around eight and a half years.
