Relentless rain, flash floods, and cloudbursts have caused widespread destruction across parts of Himachal Pradesh, leaving at least five people dead and five others missing. The worst-hit areas include Kullu and Kangra districts, where several villages and tourist routes have been impacted.
Chief Minister Sukhwinder Sukhu confirmed that the state has witnessed cloudbursts at three locations and flash floods at nine sites. The situation remains critical, with authorities issuing an orange alert for Sunday, June 29, warning of more heavy rainfall, possible flash floods, and landslides in Una, Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Kangra, Chamba, Kullu, and Mandi districts.
According to the police, over 250 people have been rescued so far. Kangra Superintendent of Police said four of the deceased have been identified. In one harrowing incident, a survivor was found in a forest after being swept away. “The survivor reported that when the flash flood struck, he and several companions tried to flee into the forest. He believes eight of them were washed away,” the official said.
Tourism, a major driver of the state’s economy, has also suffered setbacks, with flash floods damaging roads in villages and popular destinations such as Manali. While the Chief Minister has encouraged visitors to experience the monsoon season, he urged them to avoid venturing near rivers and mountain streams due to the heightened risk.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as rescue teams remain on high alert for further emergencies.
