Ongoing border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, which began escalating on July 24, 2025, have sparked serious regional concerns. Rooted in long-standing colonial-era territorial disputes, the current conflict has intensified around sensitive heritage sites like the Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, stoking nationalist sentiments on both sides.
The situation took a sharp turn following two deadly incidents: the killing of a Cambodian soldier in May and a landmine blast on July 23. Full-scale armed conflict erupted the next day, with both governments accusing each other of provocation and claiming self-defense.
The fighting has involved artillery shelling, airstrikes by Thai F-16s, and alleged use of cluster munitions. Civilian areas, including schools in Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province, have come under fire, leading to mass displacement and casualties. As of July 26, the conflict has claimed at least 32 lives and left over 130 injured, with casualty numbers expected to rise.
In response to the escalating violence, the Indian Embassy in Thailand has issued a travel advisory, urging Indian nationals to avoid travel to seven Thai provinces:
Ubon Ratchathani
Surin
Sisaket
Buriram
Sa Kaeo
Chanthaburi
Trat
The Thai government has also shut multiple border checkpoints and tourist areas, declaring martial law in eight border districts. Specific high-risk locations include:
Phanom Swai Forest Park
Chong Sai Taku
Ta Phraya National Park
Chong Sa-ngam
