The Income Tax Department has extended the ITR filing due date for the assessment year 2025-26 by one more day, giving taxpayers until September 16, 2025, to file without penalty.
Earlier, the last date was September 15. However, heavy traffic and technical glitches on the e-filing portal disrupted the process, prompting the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to push the deadline forward.
According to official data, more than 7.3 crore ITRs were filed till September 15, surpassing last year’s 7.28 crore returns. The steady increase highlights the growing compliance of taxpayers.
The department also noted that the e-filing portal underwent maintenance from 12 am to 2:30 am on September 16 to update utilities. It further released troubleshooting steps for those facing portal access issues.
