The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the situation in Leh, Ladakh, came under control from 4 pm on Wednesday after at least four people were killed and over 50 injured during violent protests over demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule inclusion.

The MHA noted that while the government has been actively engaged with the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), “certain politically motivated individuals were unhappy with the progress.” The ministry also accused climate activist Sonam Wangchuk of instigating the crowd by referencing protests like the Arab Spring and Gen Z movements in Nepal.

During the unrest, youth pelted stones at the BJP office and the Hill Council, set a security vehicle on fire, and damaged property. Police and paramilitary forces deployed teargas, and some resorted to firing in self-defence. At least 30 police and CRPF personnel were injured.

Wangchuk has ended his 15-day hunger strike and called for peace. Talks between the MHA, LAB, and KDA are scheduled for October 6. Protestors demand statehood for Ladakh and Sixth Schedule extension.
