Maharashtra to Build Third Airport Near Vadhvan Port, Mumbai Metro to Connect Airports

Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, who oversees the state's financial matters, revealed on Monday the intention to establish a third airport in Mumbai during the presentation of the FY26 Budget. In his address to the state assembly, Pawar indicated that the new airport would be situated near Vadhvan port, which is expected to become operational by 2030. He also noted that the Navi Mumbai International Airport is currently 85% complete, with trial operations already conducted. Furthermore, the Mumbai Metro will provide connectivity to the existing airports, and a night landing facility at Shirdi airport is set to be introduced in the near future.

At present, India's financial center is served by two airports: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIAL), situated in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), and a second airport in Navi Mumbai, which is expected to commence operations this year. It was noted that 85 percent of the construction for Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIAL) has been finalized, and trial runs have also been successfully conducted. Furthermore, Pawar indicated that the Vadhvan port, located in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, is projected to be operational by the year 2030.

The Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra emphasized that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is being established as a center for growth, projecting an economy of $1.5 trillion by the year 2047, thereby positioning the state as a leader in the Viksit Bharat mission. During a series of announcements in the state assembly, Pawar stated that the Metro system will connect Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIAL) and Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIAL). Additionally, the Maharashtra minister revealed that a night landing facility at Shirdi Airport will be implemented in the near future.
