Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s “positive assessment” of India-US ties, saying he fully reciprocates the sentiments. Trump had earlier said he would “always be friends” with Modi and described the relationship as “special.”

“Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US share a forward-looking Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership,” Modi wrote on social media.

The exchange marked the first positive interaction between the two leaders since June, coming against the backdrop of recent criticism from Trump and his aides over India’s purchase of Russian oil. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar noted that Modi attaches “enormous importance” to relations with Washington, underscoring India’s commitment despite sharp rhetoric from US officials.
