Delhi University (DU) on Friday launched its new academic session, welcoming both first-year students and those entering the optional fourth year of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), which is being implemented in its entirety for the first time.

As part of the inaugural day, several colleges across DU conducted orientation programmes to help freshers navigate their new academic journey. At the same time, the university saw a strong response to the newly introduced fourth year under FYUP, with over 55% of eligible students choosing to continue.

According to Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, approximately 71,000 students were eligible to progress into the fourth year. Of these, 31,004 students opted out, meaning that nearly 40,000 students—more than half—have chosen to pursue the extended programme.

“We have made all necessary arrangements for teaching and learning, both for incoming students and those joining the fourth year,” said VC Singh. “I want to assure our students that they have nothing to worry about.”

This academic year, DU is offering 71,624 undergraduate seats across 79 programmes in 69 colleges.
