Authorities have sounded an alert along Maharashtra’s Palghar coast after containers from a cargo vessel reportedly fell into the Arabian Sea and may drift ashore.
Police said the Directorate General of Shipping confirmed that 48 containers slipped off the ship ‘MV Phonnix 15’ after it passed 20 nautical miles from Salah in Oman. Eight containers have been retrieved, while the rest remain untraced and could wash up near the shore.
On Monday, instructions were sent to all coastal police stations — Safala, Kelva, Satpati, Tarapur, Wangaon, Dahanu and Gholwad — to keep watch. Fishermen and residents have been urged to alert the Navy, Coast Guard and local police if they spot floating containers.
The Palghar police added that surveillance of the Konkan coastline was being carried out in coordination with maritime agencies to ensure safety and security.
