Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to miss the upcoming G7 summit in Canada from June 15–17, marking his first absence in six years. Several factors contribute to this decision: India has not received a formal invitation, diplomatic ties between India and Canada remain strained—mainly due to unresolved issues surrounding the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar—and there are security concerns about Modi’s visit.
Although Canada’s new government has shown interest in mending relations, Indian officials stress that improvements must come before any high-level engagement takes place. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has also confirmed it has no information regarding Modi’s attendance. Meanwhile, other invited countries such as South Africa, Ukraine, and Australia have confirmed participation, leaving India’s presence uncertain for now.
