On Monday morning, Delhi Police detained senior opposition MPs, including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, during protests over allegations of the Election Commission’s collusion with the ruling BJP.

Others taken into custody included Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi.

As Rahul Gandhi was being escorted away, he told reporters eager for a statement, “This fight is not political… it is to save the Constitution. The fight is for ‘one person, one vote.’” He added, “The reality is they cannot talk… the truth is before the country.”

Joint Commissioner of Police Deepak Purohit confirmed the detentions but did not disclose the exact number, stating, “Detained INDIA bloc leaders have been taken to a nearby police station.”

Purohit explained that the opposition had no police permission for a protest of this scale, noting that only a group of 30 MPs was allowed to march and submit a complaint to the Election Commission.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla said, “The Election Commission permitted 30 MPs to visit, but over 200 marched. We intervened to prevent any law and order disruption. Those involved were detained. Some MPs tried to breach barricades and were also taken into custody.”

Video footage from outside Parliament showed a large crowd of politicians and party workers waving placards, chanting slogans, and pushing against police barricades.
