Uddhav and Raj Thackeray share stage after 20 years at Worli rally.
Joint protest against Hindi mandate in primary schools sparks unity.
Alliance buzz grows ahead of Maharashtra local body elections.
Two decades after their political fallout, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray are set to share the stage at the 'Awaj Marathicha' (Voice of Marathi) rally in Mumbai’s Worli — a development seen as a major moment in Maharashtra politics.
The rally, organized in response to the Mahayuti government’s controversial (and now-withdrawn) move to make Hindi compulsory as a third language in primary schools, marks a rare show of unity between the Thackeray cousins. Both parties had strongly opposed the decision, joining voices with civil society groups and intellectuals — ultimately leading to the government's rollback.
Political analysts believe this joint appearance could be the first step toward a potential reunion between Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS, especially with local body polls approaching. Preparations for the event at the 8,000-capacity NSCI Dome have been in full swing, with a much larger turnout expected. To manage the overflow, giant LED screens have been set up outside the venue and across key parts of Mumbai.
Senior leaders from both parties have coordinated the rally to project a message of Marathi unity and cultural pride. Hoardings and social media campaigns prominently feature the two cousins alongside their political patriarch, Bal Thackeray. Allied parties like NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) and the Left are also expected to join the event, with top leaders sending their representatives.
While the official agenda focuses on defending Marathi identity and language rights, the rally is widely viewed as a strategic political signal — possibly laying the groundwork for renewed Thackeray collaboration ahead of key electoral battles in the state.
