PANJIM: Three lanes of the new Zuari Bridge will be opened as one-way for all types of vehicles proceeding from the Margao and Mormugao sides to the Panjim side.
One lane will be one-way for heavy vehicular traffic for weights more than 12 tonnes from the Panjim side to Margao and Mormugao side, when the new bridge will be thrown open for vehicular traffic from Friday, December 30.
The old Zuari Bridge will now be made one-way for light two-axle vehicular traffic of weights up to 12 tonnes coming from the Panjim side and heading towards Margao and Mormugao side.
The PWD has issued guidelines for vehicular transit restrictions on both -- old and new Zuari bridges on NH 66, according to PWD chief engineer D C Gupta.
There will be restrictions to the entry of heavy vehicles weighing more than 12 tonnes on the old Zuari Bridge for which a height barrier has been erected on Agasaim side of the old bridge.
The vehicle operators and the general public have been requested to take note of the opening of the right-hand side branch of the new Zuari Bridge on National Highway 66 for vehicular traffic from December 30 onwards.
Zuari Bridge is one of the important bridges linking both the districts of the State. The existing cantilever bridge was closed for heavy vehicular traffic for last 25 years after one of its spans developed stress. The bridge was later restrengthened by Freyssinet-India in association with IIT, Mumbai, and reopened for vehicular traffic with restrictions.
