PONDA: Two men were killed and a woman seriously injured after their car was crushed between a tanker and a truck near Dudhsagar temple, Mollem on Sunday.
According to Collem police, Remidias Fernandes (63) and his wife Valinda Fernandes were heading to Dandeli, Karnataka for a wedding in a Maruti Swift (GA-06-D-8869) driven by Amith Redkar (35).
At 6.45 am, they saw a truck (GA-06-T-0011) , that had broken down the previous night, heading to Belgaum. As soon as they passed it, a tanker (TN-30-AH-1751) speeding in the opposite direction collided into their car and pinned it to the truck.
Remidias and Redkar, a resident of Thane-Cortalim, Vasco, died on the spot, while Valinda sustained serious injuries. Collem police and fire personnel struggled for an hour to extract the trio from the car.
Meanwhile, the accident had caused a heavy traffic jam on the highway. Valinda was later sent for treatment and the bodies for post-mortem at GMC, Bambolim.
Collem police arrested the tanker diver Morturaj Perial Swami, a Tamil Nadu native, for rash driving. Police Sub Inspector Sachin Lokre and police personnel under the guidance of Collem Police Inspector Nilesh Diagodkar conducted the panchanama.
