MARGAO: In the wake of a devastating heat wave that has claimed over 500 lives in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Goa Haj Committee Chairman Urfan Mulla has assured the public that all 164 pilgrims from Goa are safe and accounted for. The announcement comes as a relief to many, as concerns mounted following reports of numerous fatalities, including 68 Indian nationals, at the holy site.

Speaking to mediapersons, Mulla stated, “All the 164 Goa Hajis who departed from our state on June 8, 2024, are safe. We are in constant communication with the National Haj Committee secretary and BJP leaders at the Centre to monitor the situation closely.”

The chairman emphasised that Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is personally overseeing the matter and maintaining direct contact with union ministers to ensure the pilgrims’ well-being. Mulla confirmed that the Goan contingent is scheduled to return home on July 19, 2024.

The unprecedented heat wave in Mecca has posed significant challenges for pilgrims participating in the annual Haj pilgrimage. With temperatures soaring to dangerous levels, Saudi authorities have implemented emergency measures to protect visitors and prevent further casualties.

This year’s Haj season has been particularly difficult, with the global death toll surpassing 500. The Indian government has expressed deep concern over the loss of 68 of its citizens and is working closely with Saudi officials to provide support and assistance to affected families.

As the Goan pilgrims prepare for their return, local authorities are coordinating efforts to ensure a smooth and safe journey back. The Goa Haj Committee continues to provide updates to families and has assured them of all necessary support upon the pilgrims’ arrival.
