PORVORIM: Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane on Thursday informed the Legislative Assembly that the government will grant temporary status to workers who have completed more than five years working as daily wages and on contract basis in the municipal councils and Forest department.

Replying to a starred question tabled by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, the Minister said that regularisation of contractual and temporary workers is under active consideration of the government. By Monday, August 7, the file will be cleared by the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA).

Kamat said that many workers are working as daily wages in different municipal councils and that the government had assured to regularise their services. He brought to the notice of the House that as many as 309 workers working in the Forest department had been given temporary status by the government.

Earlier, the Minister pointed to the Supreme Court judgement on temporary/contractual employees. Which states regularisation is to be made only on vacant posts as a one-time measure.

The municipal councils are therefore required to fill this post on available vacancies and in case the council justifies their workload then the council may submit their proposal for posts creation.
