MAPUSA: Claiming that there is complete breakdown of law and order in the State especially in Calangute constituency, concerned residents led by Goencho Avaaz Party on Saturday submitted memorandum to the police inspectors of Calangute, Anjuna and Mapusa Police Stations demanding round-the-clock strict patrolling at all main junctions in the constituency.
The residents called for random checks of passersby into the area and more intensely between 8 pm to 8 am. They said these checks should include personal identification verification and search for arms and ammunition as this would narrow down the search in case of any untoward incident.
They demanded that police booths be set up in each village, where people can immediately rush to in the event of an emergency with at least one woman police deployed.
They said the police need to be aware of “who and who’s” currently residing on any given date and time in their respective jurisdictions and called for adequate police personnel to meet the requirements of the constituency including women personnel for women-related crimes and issues.
They demanded that CCTV cameras be installed on main roads and hot spots and by-lanes be identified within a fortnight.
The residents of Calangute constituency included those from Candolim-Sinquerim, Calangute-Baga, Arpora-Nagoa and Parra.
They claimed that there is complete breakdown of law and order in Calangute constituency where their right to live in peace has been infringed due to the negligence and failure of the concerned authorities in performing their duties.
The residents said the recent spate of crimes such as rape, murder, gang fights, shootouts and other anti-social activities that the people of Goa, particularly Calangute and Candolim have been subjected to, is a matter of immense concern.
They pointed out that all these incidents are giving a bad name to Calangute and causing damage to the tourism industry, which is the main source of their livelihood.
They complained that commuters drink and drive and break the bottles in the middle of the road.
They expressed concern over rising snatching cases in the locality which have created fear amongst the people.
The women complained that they feel unsafe to move out of their houses on account of the rising number of crimes against women.
