Caranzalem fishermen ask politicians to stay at arm’s length from beach cleaning operations

PANJIM: Traditional fishermen of Caranzalem on Thursday said that they do not want political interference on the issue of beach cleaning as they have done it by investing their money.

They also alleged that government authorities have turned a blind eye towards the cleaning of the beach which is frequented by tourists as well as people of the city regularly.

Speaking to reporters, Francis Vaz, President, Caranzalem Ramponkar Association, said, “We have cleaned 80 to 90 per cent of the beach spending our money and removed around 100 tonnes of garbage and will start the season in a day or two.”

Manuel Po, Secretary, Caranzalem Ramponkar Association, said, “The fishermen here are suffering and we have been cleaning the beach for the last ten days and no government official has ever visited the beach.We do not require politics as we have cleaned the beach with our hard earned money.”

Menino D'Souza, a fisherman said, “The garbage scattered over the beach is not just causing problems for fishermen but it creates trouble for tourists also who visit the beautiful beach.”
