PONDA: Despite a hefty fine of Rs 1000, two-wheeler riders in Ponda continue to tear down the streets without their helmets, and most pillion riders do not wear any protective gear either. From January to November this year, the Ponda police booked 5,926 cases of riding without a helmet. The fine was hiked from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000, , after the implementation of the new Motor Vehicle Act from April this year, but it has not proved deterred bike riders. While a traffic inspector said the number of violations have reduced by 30 to 40 per cent after the hike, he added that most college-going youth refuse to wear helmets as they think it would ruin their hair style.
