PANJIM: Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) chief Lalduhoma is all set to become the next Chief Minister of Mizoram as his alliance swept the Mizoram polls with 27 seats. Interestingly, he has a professional Goa connection. As a former IPS officer, Lalduhoma as a SDPO (ASP) of Panjim and was promoted as a Superintendent of Police North Goa later. He stayed at Patto in Panjim during his stint in Goa.
Lalduhoma joined Goa police between 1977 and 1982 under the Indian Police Services (IPS) cadre.
Now in 2023, his party secured a landslide victory in the State assembly election. The ZPM won 27 of the total 40 assembly seats in Mizoram, while the incumbent CM's party, Mizo National Front (MNF) won 10 seats.
After Goa, he was appointed the in-charge of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s security. After retiring, he founded ZPM. In 1984, he became a Lok Sabha MP. He was later disqualified under the anti-defection law, the first MP to do so.
In 2020, Lalduhoma was again disqualified under the anti-defection law, this time as an MLA in Mizoram. He won the bypolls in Serchhip in 2021.
In the latest assembly polls, Lalduhoma won with his alliance ousting MNF top leadership including Chief Minister Zoramthanga, Deputy CM Tawnluia, Health Minister R Lalthangliana and Rural Development Minister Laruatkima.
