PANJIM: To create awareness about organ donation in the State, the Goa Medical College (GMC) will organise ‘GOMECOTHON 2020’ on Sunday March 9, at 6 am.
The theme of the marathon would be organ donation and include 900 participants which include doctors of GMC, Indian Medical Association (IMA), Students and Staff of GMC.
GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar informed that the marathon is corresponding with International Women’s Day on March 8.
“We are happy to see 500 plus female runners participating for the run across 2 kms, 5 kms, and 10 kms categories.
The State established the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation in Goa, which has launched the Deceased Donor Transplant Programme in Goa, the crux for the success of this programme is Organ Donation, he said.
Dr Bandekar rued the fact that only 0.8% people donate organs in the country.
“Only 25 people have pledged their organs in the State despite the fact that at least two to three brain dead cases are registered every month,” he lamented.
He said that the relatives somehow have reservations on organ donation.
