PANJIM: With nearly 45 days left for monsoon season to end on September 30, Goa surpassed its seasonal average rainfall of 120 inches following heavy showers.
As on date, with 27 per cent surplus rainfall, the State received a total 122.04 inches of rainfall.
The 2019 season had witnessed record 150 inches of rains during the four-month long season. The 2020 season saw a record 100 inches of rains in the first 66 days of the season, which is the second fastest since 2013.
Though the season began from June 1, the onset of monsoon over Goa was delayed till June 11. Since then, it has rained continuously with the State recording 27 per cent surplus rains till date.
As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa Observatory data till date the State has received 122.04 inches of rainfall. So far, August has recorded 29 inches of rain, while June recorded 42 inches and July crossed 50 inches.
The State has been receiving heavy showers since Friday late evening as a result of formation of a low-pressure area over North-West Bay of Bengal. The rains have been accompanied by strong wind currents moving at a speed of 30-45kmph.
In the last 24-hours (till 8 am), the IMD recorded 3.77 inches of rainfall. The showers continued after 8 am.
The gusty winds kept Fire Department personnel on their toes with complaints of trees getting uprooted, damage to electric poles, partial landslide at Ponda, etc.
Since Saturday morning, Mapusa received maximum rainfall of 5.86 inches, followed by Pernem (5.26 inches), Sanquelim (5.03 inches) and Old Goa (5 inches).
The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall for the State at isolated places till August 20, while fishermen have been warned not to venture into sea during the period.
