PANJIM: The chaotic traffic congestion will be a thing of the past at the Chimbel junction on the Old Goa By-Pass with the commissioning of the flyover bridge by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming St Francis Xavier exposition.
Santa Cruz MLA Rudolf Fernandes, Zilla Panchayat (ZP) Member Girish Uskaikar, Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Rohit Monserrate, Chimbel Sarpanch Shankar Naik, panchayat members, PWD officials and others were present.
Sawant said that the one-lane of the overbridge was thrown open considering the urgent need to alleviate traffic congestion at Chimbel junction. The newly opened section of the overpass will now be accessible to the public, marking a significant milestone in improving connectivity and reducing travel time for commuters, he added.
The second phase of the bridge is set to follow, with construction expected to be completed within the next six months. This phased approach is a step forward in enhancing local infrastructure and meeting the community's needs, he said. The entire cost of the overbridge is Rs 43 crore.
The Chief Minister further stated that the ongoing construction work of the elevated corridor at Porvorim is likely to be completed within next one-and-half years. He also informed that the western bypass at Margao will be ready by December this year.
Rudolf Fernandes said that the overbridge was the dream of his mother former Minister Victoria Fernandes.
