The Congress party has strongly backed the ongoing protest by doctors in Goa, demanding the removal of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane over his controversial behavior at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The protest erupted after Rane, during a surprise visit on Saturday, publicly scolded Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar and ordered his suspension—actions condemned by doctors and opposition leaders alike.
Doctors from GMCH, supported by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD), held a protest outside the hospital on Monday. They demanded a public apology and an end to VIP interference in healthcare, calling the minister’s actions a humiliation and a serious blow to the morale of the medical community. Goa Congress President Amit Patkar described the BJP government’s response as “intoxicated arrogance” and accused Rane of abusing power.
Under growing public pressure, Rane issued a public apology, saying he regretted his harsh words and that emotions had overcome him. He clarified that his intent was to prioritize patient care, not insult doctors. Despite the apology, protests persisted, with doctors demanding a formal apology at the site of the incident.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant later overruled the suspension and promised that due process would be followed. He urged doctors to return to work to prevent disruption of services. Still, Congress leaders insisted on Rane’s dismissal and warned of a larger revolt if action was not taken.
