Garbage Dumping Returns to New Vaddem Despite Dustbin Removal

Herald Team

Residents of New Vaddem’s Ward 23 continue to struggle with rampant roadside garbage dumping, even after the removal of a public dustbin that was once the source of overflowing waste and health concerns. The bin was relocated following repeated appeals and a formal representation to Ward Councillor Yatin Kamurlekar, in hopes of curbing unsanitary conditions and encouraging better waste practices.

However, instead of resolving the issue, the measure has led to a new problem: individuals—including passing motorists and some locals—are now dumping trash directly along the roadside, and in some cases, even on private properties.

Frustrated residents say that despite efforts to enhance cleanliness and improve the area’s living conditions, the irresponsible actions of a few continue to undermine community progress. The absence of a designated dumping spot was intended to promote responsible disposal, but the lack of civic discipline has made the situation worse. Homeowners bordering the affected area are especially distressed, as they now face the daily nuisance of garbage piling up near their homes.

In response, the local community is calling for stricter enforcement of anti-littering laws and proactive steps by the municipal authorities. Proposed solutions include:

  • Installing CCTV cameras to monitor and identify offenders

  • Imposing penalties and fines on those caught dumping waste illegally

  • Launching awareness campaigns to educate the public on responsible waste management

  • Introducing door-to-door garbage collection to eliminate the need for roadside dumping

Councillor Kamurlekar has acknowledged the concerns and assured residents that additional measures will be taken. He urged citizens to cooperate in maintaining cleanliness and to promptly report incidents of illegal dumping to local authorities.
