In a significant move towards preserving Goa’s architectural and cultural heritage, the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Department is drafting a dedicated policy under the Regional Plan to protect heritage homes located in the state’s villages.
TCP Minister Vishwajit Rane announced that the upcoming policy will aim to recognize and safeguard traditional Goan heritage structures, similar to the conservation zones already defined within the Outline Development Plans (ODPs) for urban areas.
“The goal is to ensure structural stability, cultural continuity, and architectural preservation of Goa’s unique heritage homes,” Rane said. The policy will provide protective measures, formal recognition, and potentially offer incentives to homeowners to conserve and maintain their ancestral properties.
This initiative comes amid growing concerns over the deterioration and destruction of historic homes across rural Goa, often due to neglect, lack of awareness, or redevelopment pressures.
The TCP Department is expected to soon consult stakeholders, including heritage experts, local bodies, and community members, as it finalizes the policy framework.
