PANJIM: The State government on Thursday launched the 21st livestock census which will provide details about various species of animals across the State with special focus on aggressive breeds of canines by pet owners.
Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Nilkanth Halarnkar said the livestock census would be useful for proper planning and formulation of programme meant for improvement in the livestock sector in the state.
He said the current census will focus on 16 species and 221 breeds of livestock including poultry birds, buffaloes, camels, goats, pigs, donkeys, sheep, horses, dogs, rabbits, yaks, elephants and ducks.
“Officials of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services will visit households, gaushalas, military areas, aviation zones and other establishments and for the detailed enumeration of the pets and livestock,” said the minister.
