Luxury Villas Flow, Villages Struggle: Anjuna’s Water Crisis Exposes Stark Divide

Herald Team

Residents of Anjuna have been grappling with an acute water crisis for the past five days following damage to the main water pipeline at Guirim, plunging large parts of the village into disruption. With taps running dry, families are struggling to manage daily needs, and frustration is mounting over what many call a recurring and poorly handled issue.

The crisis is most severe in localities like Zor-Vaddo, where water shortages have persisted not just in recent days but for months—even during the rainy season. Angry residents point to a stark imbalance: while luxury hotels and tourist villas continue to enjoy uninterrupted water supply, ordinary households are left to fend for themselves. This disparity has sparked growing resentment, culminating in protests outside the Public Works Department (PWD) office in Mapusa, where locals demanded swift action and fair water distribution.

PWD officials say repair work on the pipeline is in progress and have promised restoration of normal supply soon. But residents aren't convinced. Many are calling for a long-term solution instead of temporary fixes. Social media is flooded with photos and videos of villagers queuing for water, demanding accountability and transparency from authorities.

Beyond daily inconvenience, the water shortage poses serious risks to health and hygiene, especially for families with elderly or young children. As repairs drag on, Anjuna's residents are hoping this crisis will finally push the authorities to act decisively—ensuring no family is left behind in the shadow of tourism-driven privilege.
