MARGAO: A round table discussion, participants highlighted on road safety and traffic management in Margao has called for a dedicated city bus service, similar to that of Panjim.
The participants stressed on the need for police to crack down on drunk drivers and conductors in buses, and abusive behaviour with girl students, denial of 50 percent bus concession, overcrowding of buses.
The above round table discussion was held at the Seminar Hall, Government College Borda, Margao on the occasion of the 13th state road safety week being observed from 14 to 20 October. This was organized by the consumer welfare cell, government college, Borda in collaboration with GOACAN.
The topic of the discussion was challenges of road safety and traffic management in the town of Margao and Salcete taluka and was organized with a view to understand the various programs being undertaken on road safety and traffic management by various stakeholders departments and agencies and to identify solutions to the grievances faced by the consumers.
This is the first in a series of Round Table Discussions which aims to promote networking and synergy between Government agencies andw civil society.
The participants in the discussion were unanimous that a proper city bus service be introduced in Margao by KTCL in collaboration with Margao Municipal Council on the lines of Panaji City.
The participants also felt that the elected Village Panchayat members and the Municipal Councillors must be regularly petitioned on road safety and traffic management issues so that they appear on the agenda of the fortnightly meeting and Gram Sabhas and the bi-monthly meetings of the Municipal Councils.
The participants were in agreement to take this discussion process forward by organising activities between the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims November 17 and World Sustainable Transport Day November 26.
