Vijai Sardesai Welcomes Third District for ST Community, Questions Administrative Gains

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has welcomed the government’s move to form a third district in Goa with a focus on the Scheduled Tribes (ST) community but voiced skepticism over its administrative value.

Speaking on the proposed district comprising Canacona, Quepem, Sanguem, and Dharbandora, Sardesai said, “I welcome the decision if it benefits the ST community. But beyond that, there’s little hope for real progress. Creating a third district mainly adds to government expenditure. There’s no guarantee that administration will actually improve.”

Sardesai’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who recently stated that the government will soon announce the name and headquarters of the new district, considering connectivity across the four talukas.

While the government has framed the move as a step toward decentralization, Sardesai’s comments reflect growing concerns among opposition leaders about the practicality and cost-effectiveness of such administrative restructuring.
