Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao on Tuesday informed the Goa Legislative Assembly that the NGO Street Providence has submitted Utilisation Certificates (UCs) to the Directorate of Women and Child Development and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for the funds received to run shelter homes for the homeless.
Alemao tabled the related documents in the House as part of his follow-up to the concerns he raised on Monday regarding the functioning of Street Providence and the utilisation of public funds granted to the organisation for managing shelter homes.
“The relevant utilisation certificates have been submitted by the organisation to both departments,” Alemao said, countering speculation about fund misuse.
On Monday, Alemao had questioned the transparency and oversight of financial assistance provided to Street Providence, which operates multiple shelter homes across Goa for the homeless and differently-abled.
The submission of UCs is a statutory requirement to verify whether government grants have been spent for the intended purposes. The issue has drawn attention in recent days amid increasing scrutiny of NGOs receiving state support.
