Road traffic accidents in Goa have reached a critical level, with 286 fatalities recorded in 2024 across 2,682 accidents statewide. Alarmingly, over 45 percent of those killed were youths under the age of 35, signaling a grim trend for road safety in the state.
According to the information received from the traffic department of the police, a total of 1,248 accidents have been registered in the state between 1 January 2025 and 11 July 2025 .
If we look at these statistics, it is clear that one person is dying every 32 hours in Goa.
During the six months from January to June 2025 , a total of 633 accidents took place in South Goa, out of which 67 people died. In other accidents, 58 people were seriously injured, while people sustained minor injuries in 155 accidents.
According to the annual road accident analysis report, a total of 130 individuals under 35 lost their lives in road crashes comprising 113 men and 17 women. This troubling statistic highlights a growing vulnerability among young commuters, especially male riders.
In 2024 Overall, 1,041 people were injured in road accidents throughout the year, with 888 male and 153 female victims.
While the total number of accidents dropped by 5.76 percent from the 2,846 reported in 2023, and deaths saw a marginal decrease of 1.38 percent (down from 290), officials say the latest figures still reflect an urgent need for policy intervention, public awareness, and stricter enforcement.
RTO inspectors do not seem to be serious on testing new drivers. Licences are given to anyone. Road Safety Engineering standards are much below IRC standards. The 25–35 age group witnessed 63 fatalities (22.02 percent) and 315 injuries, while the 18–25 age bracket recorded 61 deaths (21.32 percent) and 224 injuries. Among children under 18, six deaths were reported along with 21 injuries.
Even the elderly were not spared, with 36 people aged 60 and above losing their lives and 84 sustaining injuries in road mishaps.
Experts suggest that many of these deaths could be preventable through stricter helmet compliance, curbing speeding, and improved awareness among young riders and pedestrians.
In the state, 286 people died in 2,682 road accidents between January 1 and December 31, 2024. Of these, 130 people died due to not using safety equipment (helmets, seat belts). This percentage is 45.45.
Out of the above 130, 115 people died due to not using helmets. Apart from this, 148 people were seriously injured and 370 were slightly injured, as per the Annual Accident Analysis Report 2024 of the Traffic Police Department.
